A gaze is never neutral
Film does not merely reflect our ideas about gender and identity — it also helps shape them. Through the images and narratives that surround us, we learn to see the world through a gaze that influences how we understand ourselves and others.
Reframing the Gaze brings together two video works that explore what happens when the direction of the gaze is reversed. When the camera changes hands, and the person who was once the subject of someone else's story becomes the one telling their own.
In Slit Your Click, Cassie Augusta Jørgensen reinterprets the iconic museum scene from Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980). Drawing on a film history in which female sexuality and trans identity have been staged through a sexualising and controlling gaze, the work examines how the gaze shapes our understanding of gender, identity, and power. By rewriting the original scene, Jørgensen allows the figure who was once looked at to assume the role of the one who looks back, challenging the power structures embedded within the gaze itself.
In Rooftop, Victoria Verseau explores the relationship between the camera's gaze and the way we look at ourselves. Alone in a hotel room, she performs in front of the camera, alternately meeting the lens and her own reflection in the mirror. Between these two gazes emerges a space where identity is not simply something that is seen, but something that can be tested, performed, and shaped. Drawing on the internalised images of femininity found in popular culture, Verseau investigates how we learn to see ourselves through the images and stories that surround us, and how the camera can simultaneously become a tool for reclaiming control over one's own image.
Reframing the Gaze is not only about seeing through a different gaze, but about the right to define your own story.

Bodies, structures and systems are not fixed, but continually shaped by the contexts
in which they exist.
The exhibition Nervous Systems takes its starting point in the theme of Metamorphosis and explores change as a fundamental condition. The boundaries between the natural and the constructed dissolve, while the familiar appears shifted — at once recognisable and strange.
Bodies, structures and systems are not fixed, but continually shaped by the contexts in which they exist. The living appears as something constantly affected by technology, its surroundings and the infrastructures of which it is part.
The exhibition centres on these states of transition, where something is in the midst of transformation and has yet to find its form.
It points towards a reality we already inhabit, in which the boundaries between the organic and the technological have become increasingly blurred. Our understanding of what is living, human and mechanical is constantly evolving.
Metamorphosis is understood not as a completed process, but as something ongoing — something perpetually in the process of becoming something else. The exhibition opens up a space in which to inhabit and experience this state without the need to arrive at definitive answers.
Metamorphosis is the overarching theme for the exhibitions presented at Den Nordiske Ambassade throughout 2026/2027.
Den Nordiske Ambassade brings together a strong local grounding with an outlook towards international currents, creating a space for encounters, conversations and artistic experimentation across places and experiences.

Den Nordiske Ambassade, established in 2026, is a new exhibition space and independent artistic territory for contemporary art in the heart of Svendborg.
The Ambassade provides a framework for exhibitions, artist-led projects, and experimental formats, with a focus on contemporary artistic practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and artistic inquiry. With both a local grounding and an international outlook, it seeks to create space for dialogue, sensibility, and critical reflection through research-based practices and inclusive modes of presentation.
Den Nordiske Ambassade is committed to supporting a sustainable cultural ecosystem for the benefit of all, while working towards healthy and sustainable working conditions for professional artists across all creative and artistic fields.
The Ambassade was founded, 2026, by visual artist Camilla Carlsen, visual designer Thomas Cassander, visual artist Matilde Duus, visual designer and curator Josephine Dupont, cultural producer Julie Søgren Jensen, and visual artist Nils Elvebakk Skalegård. Architect Elin Hirsch assisted with upstart & development.
